Strengthening Local Capacity in The RMG Sector of Bangladesh to Ensure Workplaces Are Safe from Gender-Based Violence and Harassment
Project Name: Strengthening Local Capacity in The RMG Sector of Bangladesh to Ensure Workplaces Are Safe from Gender-Based Violence and Harassment
Partnerships:
- Fair Wear Foundation
- GIZ
- PHULKI (Bangladesh)
Project Timeline: April 1st, 2023 – June 2024
Project Goal: To prevent and address violence and harassment in the Bangladesh garment sector by strengthening local capacity to independently run the Violence and Harassment Prevention Programme (VHP Programme).
Project Overview: The collaboration between Fair Wear, GIZ, and PHULKI focused on ensuring that the VHP Programme would continue independently in Bangladesh after June 2024. By the end of this partnership, PHULKI and other trained local organizations will be able to run the program without external intervention.
Key Changes Starting January 2025:
- Fair Wear’s role in the planning, delivery, reporting, or invoicing of the VHP Programme will conclude.
- Brands will need to directly contact local organizations that have been trained by Fair Wear for the continuation of the VHP Programme.
- Non-Fair Wear brands can also directly contact the trained organizations to book the training.
- Local organizations will independently manage their own fees, planning, and reporting for the VHP Programme.
What This Means for Stakeholders:
Fair Wear Member Brands:
- From January 2025, member brands will need to reach out to local organizations directly to request the VHP Programme.
- They will be provided with the contact details of the trained local organizations by Fair Wear.
- Training, reporting, and invoicing will be done directly between the member brands and local organizations.
Non-Fair Wear Brands:
- Non-Fair Wear brands will also be able to directly book the VHP Programme with the local organizations trained by Fair Wear.
Local Organizations:
- Trained local organizations will now manage the VHP Programme independently, setting their own fees and handling all logistics (planning, invoicing, and reporting) without external support from Fair Wear.
Transition and Sustainability:
- PHULKI, along with other local organizations, will be responsible for ensuring the continuation and sustainability of the VHP Programme.
- Local capacity will be strengthened to handle gender-based violence and harassment issues, ensuring safer workplaces for workers in the RMG sector.
Conclusion:
With the successful handover of the VHP Programme, local organizations like PHULKI will play a key role in maintaining and expanding the impact of the program in the Bangladesh garment sector. Brands, both Fair Wear members and non-Fair Wear, can now engage directly with these organizations to ensure their workplaces are safe and free from violence and harassment.
